As an artist, our work is deeply personal. We pour time, effort and emotions into each creation. Yet, sometimes it’s challenging to look at our own artwork with enough distance to spot minor inaccuracies or areas for improvement. This is where photography can become an incredibly valuable tool.
A photo of your current status opens the door to fresh perspective on your artwork. It allows you to:
Gain Distance: Viewing your art on a screen creates a separation that’s often hard to achieve with the naked eye.
Spot Details: Shadows, color trainsitions or uninetended inconsistencies often stand out more clearly in photos.
Evaluate Composition: By reducing the artwork to a smaller format, it’s easier to assess whether the composition is harmonius.
In my example I thought i was finished. So i took a photo and look at it. Then I realized that the wave is so flat. I realized that the wave has the same white color everywhere. So I looked at pinterest at “waves” and I have seen that the waves have shadows to (surprise). I have paint the the shadows and the result is so much better.
Mistakes as Opportunities
Discovering “mistakes” doesn’t mean your artwork is flawed – quite the opposite! 🙂 It provides an opportunity to grow and refine your work. You might notice shadows you’ve overlooked or areas where more contrast could enhance the piece. Positive surprises are also possible: sometimes photos reveal details that give your artwork unexpected depth or tension.
Give it a try – you’ll be amazed how much you can learn from this fresh perspective!
